Applications and Interviews - Mistakes to avoid

If you have applied for a new job you will need to make sure that you don’t make some of the classic mistakes that are more common than you might think. People who are successful in the recruitment process are those who take the time to ensure they are well prepared for the process.

Research

It can’t be overstated that you shouldn’t come to an interview without having done some research on the position and the company. Interviewers expect applicants at this level to have some knowledge of the marketplace and the company itself. Not bothering to look at the company’s website, or do some background reading is an indication that you lack initiative and you’re not really bothered about the job.

Complaining about your last job

It doesn’t matter how desperate you are to change jobs, you should never complain or moan about your current or previous employer. It creates a bad impression of you, particularly if you are being interviewed by the person who would be your new manager. They will not want to employ someone who is negative. If you are asked why you want to leave your current position, make your answer a positive one - looking for new challenges or more responsibility, rather than a catalogue of disasters.

Listening

It’s important that you actually listen to what the interviewer is saying, and watch how he or she reacts to your answers. It’s a common mistake to spend the interview talking about yourself, or wandering off the subject in hand. If you take the time to listen to the question, you can work out exactly what information the interviewer is hoping to get from you, and make sure that you give them what they want. Similarly, their facial expressions will tell you how they are reacting to your answers and you can adjust your replies accordingly.
