Don’t be a Difficult Interviewee
No job is perfect. Apart from the difficulties that can be encountered when researching candidates for certain vacancies, recruitment consultants often have to deal with interviewees who are uncooperative or difficult. These interviewees won’t get past the preliminary interview and have talked themselves out of a job. If you want to avoid being a difficult interviewee, here are some tips:
Companies do want:
- Candidates that turn up on time
- Candidates that are well presented
- Candidates that have done some research on the company
- Candidates that can talk fully around a subject
- Candidates that show evidence of initiative and enthusiasm
Companies do not want:
- Candidates who are late
- Candidates who are sloppy
- Candidates who are monosyllabic
- Candidates who are uninterested in the job or in the interview
- Candidates who are distracted or rude
The first interview that you have is your first face to face chance to be put forward as a potential candidate. If you don’t treat it as a serious interview, you are unlikely to get any further. Turning up on time shows courtesy to the interviewer, and as the first impression of you is usually made in less than 30 seconds after meeting you, the way you are dressed and the way you greet your interviewer is also important.
Doing your research doesn’t mean you need to spend hours in the library. Take a look at the company’s website and then read around the market using the internet - it won’t take long and you’ll have lots of valuable information to pull on.
Companies are looking for candidates who are articulate and enthusiastic, with the right qualifications and experience. By following the steps above, you can be an easy interviewee rather than a difficult one, which will automatically increase your chances of moving on to the next round of the recruitment process.
