Preparing for Interview

Recruiters are looking for specific candidates with the right blend of qualifications and experience. This focus means that the better prepared you are, the better chance you stand of being successful.

You need to be prepared from the moment you decide to apply. Your CV should be relevant to the job you’re applying for, reflecting the specifications in the advert or job description you’ve been given. When it comes to the interview, follow these basic steps to ensure you’re as prepared as you can be.

Don’t get lost

Find out exactly where your interview is going to be held. If you have time, do the journey before the interview so that you know how long it will take. Don’t forget to take weekday or rush-hour traffic into consideration. Take a map with you in the car, in case you are faced with diversions or delays, and always take a phone and contact number so that if you are unavoidably late, you can ring and say so.

Do some research

Find out as much about the company as you can. In addition to looking at its website and familiarising yourself with its products and services, take a look at the market in general and at the major competition. This will enable you to talk with confidence about how your skills could benefit the business.

Re-read the advert and your CV

Executive appointments adverts are usually quite specific, and you should have updated your CV to focus on the things the company is looking for. Before your interview, re-read the advert, so that you can remind yourself of what they are looking for, and re-read your CV to remind yourself what you’ve told them about you.
Prepare questions

Interviewers for executive appointments want to see evidence of initiative and intelligence. Use your research to formulate some useful questions that will highlight these qualities. Don’t ask about salary or working environment unless prompted; spend your time on the business in order to impress.

Good preparation is the key to many things, both in our working and personal lives. Interviews are no exception. Being well prepared will help to boost your self-confidence and increase your chances of being offered the job.
