Writing a CV? Tell the Truth

To some extent, everyone uses their CV to make them look as good as possible. In a competitive employment world, we know that our CV is the first point of call for many recruiters, and we want ours to stand out, improving our chances of getting called for interview.

There is a fine line, however, between writing your CV to fit the job you are applying for, and being misleading. If you have been hired because of the qualifications you say you have, or the experience you claim you’ve gained and it’s later found out that these are fabricated, you’re likely to lose your job and have a hard time getting another one.

Many people have been tempted to lie or bend the truth on their CV or in an interview. If you are considering this, then bear in mind that most interviewers, especially those working for executive search companies, can spot statements that are probably not accurate, and will question you on them in your interview. These people are professional recruiters and they will have encountered lots of people who are trying to apply for jobs that are outside their area of expertise or indeed their competence.

The most common half-truths found on CVs are an exaggeration of qualifications, made-up referees, being creative about work experience, claiming to have worked for a company longer than you actually did, over emphasising qualities you don’t have and quoting responsibilities or positions that you haven’t attained. Even if your executive search firm or final interviewer is lax and fails to spot or follow up on your inconsistencies, you are likely to be found out when you start working and discover that the job is beyond your capabilities.

It’s much better to approach your job hunting professionally That way, you can demonstrate your desire to do well and your commitment to the job, which is much more attractive to an employer than a fabricated work history.
