The offices of Ernst and Young in Newcastle have seen both graduate and executive appointments filled in recent weeks.
According to local publication The Journal, the accountancy firm has taken on 45 graduates and four senior employees, which combined makes this the highest professional services recruitment drive to have taken place in the area this year.
The company's offices in Citygate have undergone a refit in order to accommodate the new members of staff.
Mark Hatton, office managing partner at Ernst & Young Newcastle, said: "Supplementing our experienced appointments with the recruitment of some of the north-east's brightest young graduate talent will help cement our position as a pre-eminent provider of professional services in the region."He added that a "marked upturn" in transactions activity has prompted healthy growth for his business in the past 12 months.
Ernst & Young notes that as part of the 17 per cent increase of its workforce, Simon Whiteside - formerly of PricewaterhouseCoopers - has taken on the position of executive tax director, while employee Trevor Sherlock has been promoted to the role of tax partner.
