The UK labour market is stabilising
The UK labour market is "stabilising", despite unemployment figures growing slightly in the last month, one minister claims.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of full-time students seeking employment rose slightly in December to 297,000.
However, the number of 16 to 24 year olds who have completed education and are looking for jobs remains stable at 730,000.
Chris Grayling, the employment minister, says: "There has obviously been an unwelcome increase in unemployment since the summer but these latest figures show some signs that the labour market is stabilising."He adds: "Encouragingly this is also the case for young people not in education."
The Department for Work and Pensions notes that employers who provide jobs for young people under the Work Programme could be among the 160,000 who benefit from an incentive of £2,275, which should more than provide for their annual National Insurance contributions for that individual.
Overall, the UK 's unemployment rate is at its highest since 1996.
